Fourth of July 2019

Independence Day: one of the biggest staples of summer in the United States. There’s always fireworks, American flags, and plenty of good food to go around! This summer there are plenty of celebrations happening up-the-road and down-the-road on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Here are some highlights you don’t want to miss.

Start your day at the NASA Wallops Visitor Center to see the sounding rockets and end it at the carnival, looking up into the night’s sky in awe of the blasting fireworks.

  • Sounding Rockets at Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island at 2pm

  • 94th Annual Volunteer Firemen’s Carnival 7pm-11pm
    • Chincoteague Carnival Grounds 3648 Main St.
  • Annual Old-Fashioned Fireworks Display 10pm

IMG_2167.JPGWatch the kids zoom down Front Street on bikes and scooters. Then, cool off at the Courthouse Green with some popsicles and drinks. Afterward, head down to the public library and get a book for $2 or less!

2011-10-27 15.28.11-1.jpgTry out various food trucks, lounge on some delicious ice cream and relax to some live music as the kids romp around on the playground. Parade with the kids on the Fourth and finish the afternoon with delicious, Southern dishes.

  • July 3rd: Community Picnic 5pm
    • Complete with 3 Food Trucks: Le Quetzel Mexican, Mt Nebo Eats BBQ, and In-N-Out Food Box
  • July 3rd: Ice Cream Social and Patriotic Band Concert 6:30
  • July 3rd: Mallard’s Fourth of July Eve featuring Johnny Mo and Friends 8pm

  • July 4th: Kayak the Seaside with Burnham Guides 9am-3pm
    • Ticket purchase is required.
  • July 4th: Doo Dah Parade 5:30pm
    • King Street parking lot behind Town Hall next to Janet’s General Store and Cafe
    • A community picnic will be held directly after the Parade.

Both events will be held at Historic Onancock School 6 College Ave

Tangier Island

Tangier 040Take the boat out of Onancock Wharf and make the journey to Tangier Island. Relax with friends and wait for the fireworks to start after dark.

  • Fireworks 9pm


2014-07-15 22.59.10-3.jpgGet the dog all jazzed up for the parade and win first place for best-dressed pet. Watch the parachutists skydive as you hanker in on some corn on the cob. Finally, get as many fried Oreos as you can and ride the Ferris Wheel to look over the seaside.

  • Parade from the Welcome to Wachapreague sign to Atlantic Ave 11am
  • Watch parachutists descend from the air carrying an American Flag 1pm
  • Town Picnic at Seaside Park 1pm
    • Hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob and drinks will be provided. You are welcome to bring and share dishes as well.
  • Firemen’s Carnival 7pm-10:30pm

Silver Beach

Parade in your Fourth of July garb so the whole town can see your red, white, and blue.

Cape Charles

2014-07-06 16.05.58Start your day with a parade, live music, shops, and lots of delicious, local food. Watch the challenges, or compete yourself! Be sure to relax on the public beach before you settle in to watch the fireworks go off above the town harbor.

  • Parade beginning on Bay Ave ending on Washington Ave 10am
  • Live music all day on Bay Ave
  • Food, Craft, and Artisan Vendors on Bay Ave 10am
  • Guppie Challenge at Fishing Pier 12:30pm
  • Beautiful Baby Competition 2pm
  • Corn Hole Tournament 3pm
    • $20 a team
  • Fireworks at the Town Harbor after Dark
