When the weather gets chilly there’s nothing like escaping to a cozy retreat for a little relaxation. Virginia’s Eastern Shore is far from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s easy to slow down here.
This list is filled with places that are comfy and inviting either because of their small size or amenities like fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs.
Curl up with a good book, bundle up for a walk on the beach or some bird watching and then warm up by a fire or raid the local seafood grocer and gourmet market and whip up a feast in a vacation rental. Winter won’t seem so dark and cold after a stay in one of these cozy abodes.
1. The Little Red House, Accomac
What could be cozier than a tiny house? The Little Red House is just 225 square feet, but it’s packed with quirky charm and surrounded by the natural beauty of farm fields, marshes and a creek. The central location of the cottage makes it a great base camp for trips up and down Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
Lounge by the fire pit overlooking the water, cook fresh eggs from the owner’s chicken coop and eat breakfast on the patio or launch a kayak from the boat ramp just up the road. For a little added romance, if you book in January or February you’ll find a bottle of champagne and chocolates on your pillow when you arrive.
2. Fig Street Inn, Cape Charles
There’s something so inviting about a historic home. Fig Street Inn was originally built as a private house in 1899 but was lovingly restored and is now being run as a bed and breakfast. The rooms are touched with historic charm but stocked with luxurious modern amenities. Each room has either a jetted tub or a gas fireplace.
For an added dose of cozy, rooms are stocked with fluffy robes for lounging. After a night of peaceful sleep on a memory foam mattress, you’ll be greeted by a hearty breakfast of freshly baked pastries, seasonal fruit and something warm and comforting like French toast, quiche or an omelet. The inn is located in the heart of Cape Charles with easy access to shops, restaurants and a free public beach.
3. Key West Cottages, Chincoteague
You don’t have to book a flight to have an island getaway. Stay in a Key West Cottage on Chincoteague and you’ll feel like you’re down in the islands. Hang out on the porch of one of these candy-colored cabins and watch the sunset over the water.
You won’t have to sacrifice comfort in these homey little cottages. They’re equipped with a full kitchen and spacious bath with beachy modern finishes. If you want all the amenities of a hotel with the privacy of a vacation rental these cottages are perfect for you. When you stay in a Key West Cottage you have access to the gym, pool, breakfast area and staff at the Comfort Suites next door. The cottages are just steps from downtown Chincoteague and the beach is just a stone’s throw away.
4. The Veranda Suite at the Refuge Inn, Chincoteague
The warm wood tones and comfy furniture in this suite make it just the kind of place to spend a rainy day. From the screened in deck, you can watch Chincoteague ponies play in a pasture below or watch the Chincoteague Lighthouse blink at night. A short climb up the spiral staircase leads to a loft that’s the perfect place for a nap or just watching the ponies.
Finish out your day of relaxation with a soak in the jetted tub in the room or venture down to the hotel’s sauna, hot tub or pool. You can even borrow movies, board games and books from the hotel for a quiet day in or you can venture out. Shops, restaurants and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge are just steps away.
5. Almost Paradise, Cape Charles
